When the glorious past and the national pride of India was subdued by the rising sun of the British empire, a teacher named Pt. GauriDuttji resigned from a mission-school to serve and promote Devnagri and Hindi languages. He founded a Devnagri Pathshala or a primary-school on a platform of of his house with only 2-3 students in 1882 and donated all his wealth to sustain the school. Who would have imagined at that time that the school will be known as Devnagri College, Meerut in future and have a contribution as an important educational institution in independent India.
On 14th Nov,1883, with the attempts of late Mr. LalaTrivani Sahaiji, the primary school was shifted to a house in Vaidwada,Meerut. In 1913, it became a High School and got its own building in 1937, at Railway Road, Meerut. Due to its academic reputation and the needs of education, it was recognized as an Intermediate College in Arts in 1939, and in Science and Commerce in 1945./p>
